CHEVY CHASE'S ONLINE COMMUNITY FORUMS

Chevy Chase has three widely used community forum outlets. Although some people participate in all three, they are all a bit different and seem to have different audience types. Here is a brief rundown on these three forums and what you might expect to find on them, the number of members, and how they operate. All three are used by elected DC officials to post information. They are:

  • Chevy Chase Chatter - A members only Facebook group and the newest and fastest growing member of the three. It started in August 2018 and as of March, 2022 it has 2,150 subscribers. It provides Chevy Chase residents an opportunity to communicate unedited with their neighbors in real time. Posts vary but of the three forums it is the most child-centric and family oriented. Posts containing personal attacks on private individuals or hate speech are not permitted and will be removed.
  • Chevy Chase Community Listserv - The longest running of the three. It is a substantially moderated discussion forum that was founded in 2001 and as of March, 2022 has a roster of 5,440 members throughout the DC Metro area with the large majority coming from Chevy Chase DC, and Maryland. People use it to share information, seek advice, talk about community and area-wide issues, and to voice and debate opinions. It receives about 50 or more posts per day. It is privately run and independent of any organization.
  • NextDoor - Launched in the U.S. in 2011, it has over  8,000 members in the immediate Chevy Chase DC area. Members are connected based on their address location and grouped into localized neighborhoods (e.g., West Chevy Chase 2,157, East Chevy Chase 1,436). It provides unedited real-time communication with neighbors. Members can post to their own or several neighborhoods at once. Its rules govern what members can publish on the site. Posts include local news, buying and selling, and service recommendations.
